Commentary:

8:20-22. The new situation described by the prophet will be marked by efforts on the part of the nations to seek the God of Israel, the one, true God. All will find divine favour in Jerusalem. This will mean the fulfillment of God’s promise to Abraham that all the nations of the earth would be blessed in him (cf. Gen 12:3). The picture painted by the prophet is a figure of what will happen with the coming of Christ and the establishment of his Church.

8:23. Here the prophet graphically describes the power of intercession with God that the Jews will have, enabling all mankind to find favour with him. The number ten symbolizes completeness, and the name "Jew" here means an inhabitant of Judea after the return from exile (cf. Jer 32:12). "By saying that men of every tongue shall take hold of the robe, it is made abundantly clear that on that day the call to holiness will be heard not only by the Israelites, but by all men and women everywhere throughout the world" (St Cyril of Alexandria, "Commentarius in Zacchariam", 8, 23).

Commentary:

51. "When the days drew near for Him to be received up": these words refer to the moment when Jesus will leave this world and ascend into Heaven. Our Lord will say this more explicitly during the Last Supper: "I come from the Father and have come into the world; again, I am leaving the world and going to the Father" (John 16:28). By making His way resolutely to Jerusalem, towards His Cross, Jesus freely complies with His Father's plan for His passion and death to be the route to His resurrection and ascension.

52-53. The Samaritans were hostile towards the Jews. This enmity derived from the fact that the Samaritans were descendants of marriages of Jews with Gentiles who repopulated the region of Samaria at the time of the Assyrian captivity (in the eighth century before Christ). There were also religious differences: the Samaritans had mixed the religion of Moses with various superstitious practices, and did not accept the temple of Jerusalem as the only place where sacrifices could properly be offered. They built their own temple on Mount Gerizim, in opposition to Jerusalem (cf. John 4:20); this was why, when they realized Jesus was headed for the Holy City, they refused Him hospitality.

54-56. Jesus corrects His disciples' desire for revenge, because it is out of keeping with the mission of the Messiah, who has come to save men, not destroy them (cf. Luke 19:10; John 12:47). The Apostles are gradually learning that zeal for the things of God should not be bitter or violent.

"The Lord does everything in an admirable way [...]. He acts in this way to teach us that perfect virtue retains no desire for vengeance, and that where there is true charity there is no room for anger--in other words, that weakness should not be treated with harshness but should be helped. Indignation should be very far from holy souls, and desire for vengeance very far from great souls" (St. Ambrose, "Expositio Evangelii Sec. Lucam, in loc.").

An RSV footnote after the word "rebuked" in verse 55 points out that other ancient authorities add "and He said 'You do not know what manner of Spirit you are of; for the Son of Man came not to destroy men's lives but to save them'". These words appear in a considerable number of early Greek MSS and other versions and were included in the Clementine Vulgate; but they do not appear in the best and oldest Greek codices and have not been included in the New Vulgate.

57-62. Our Lord spells out very clearly what is involved in following Him. Being a Christian is not an easy or comfortable affair: it calls for self-denial and for putting God before everything else. See the notes on Matthew 8:18-22 and Matthew 8:22.

[The notes on Matthew 8:18-22 state:

18-22. From the very outset of His messianic preaching, Jesus rarely stays in the same place; He is always on the move. He "has nowhere to lay His head" (Matthew 8:20). Anyone who desires to be with him has to "follow Him". This phrase "following Jesus" has a very precise meaning: it means being His disciple (cf. Matthew 19:28). Sometimes the crowds "follow Him"; but Jesus' true disciples are those who "follow Him" in a permanent way, that is, who keep on following Him: being a "disciple of Jesus" and "following Him" amount to the same thing. After our Lord's ascension, "following Him" means being a Christian (cf. Acts 8:26). By the simple and sublime fact of Baptism, every Christian is called, by a divine vocation, to be a full disciple of our Lord, with all that that involves.

The evangelist here gives two specific cases of following Jesus. In the case of the scribe our Lord explains what faith requires of a person who realizes that he has been called; in the second case--that of the man who has already said "yes" to Jesus--He reminds him of what His commandment entails. The soldier who does not leave his position on the battlefront to bury his father, but instead leaves that to those in the rearguard, is doing his duty. If service to one's country makes demands like that on a person, all the more reason for it to happen in the service of Jesus Christ and His Church.

Following Christ, then, means we should make ourselves totally available to Him; whatever sacrifice He asks of us we should make: the call to follow Christ means staying up with Him, not falling behind; we either follow Him or lose Him. In the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7) Jesus explained what following Him involves --a teaching which we find summarized in even the most basic catechism of Christian doctrine: a Christian is a man who believes in Jesus Christ--a faith he receives at Baptism -- and is duty bound to serve Him. Through prayer and friendship with the Lord every Christian should try to discover the demands which this service involves as far as he personally is concerned.]

[The notes on Matthew 8:22 state:

22. "Leave the dead to bury their own dead": although this sounds very harsh, it is a style of speaking which Jesus did sometimes use: here the "dead" clearly refers to those whose interest is limited to perishable things and who have no aspirations towards the things that last forever.

"If Jesus forbade him," St. John Chrysostom comments, "it was not to have us neglect the honor due to our parents, but to make us realize that nothing is more important than the things of Heaven and that we ought to cleave to these and not to put them off even for a little while, though our engagements be ever so indispensable and pressing" ("Hom. on St. Matthew", 27).]

We see here the case of the man who wanted to follow Christ, but on one condition--that he be allowed to say goodbye to his family. Our Lord, seeing that he is rather undecided, gives him an answer which applies to all of us, for we have all received a calling to follow Him and we have to try not to receive this grace in vain. "We receive the grace of God in vain, when we receive it at the gate of our heart, and do not let it enter our heart. We receive it without receiving it, that is, we receive it without fruit, since there is no advantage in feeling the inspiration if we do not accept it [...]. It sometimes happens that being inspired to do much we consent not to the whole inspiration but only to some part of it, as did those good people in the Gospel, who upon the inspiration which our Lord gave them to follow Him wished to make reservations, the one to go first and bury his father, the other to go to take leave of his people" (St. Francis de Sales, "Treatise on the Love of God", Book 2, Chapter 11).

Our loyalty and fidelity to the mission God has given us should equip us to deal with every obstacle we meet: "There is never reason to look back (cf. Luke 9:62). The Lord is at our side. We have to be faithful and loyal; we have to face up to our obligations and we will find in Jesus the love and the stimulus we need to understand other people's faults and overcome our own" (St. J. Escriva, "Christ Is Passing By", 160).

Ex 16:1-5, 9-15

The children of Israel set out from Elim,
and came into the desert of Sin,
which is between Elim and Sinai,
on the fifteenth day of the second month
after their departure from the land of Egypt.
Here in the desert the whole assembly of the children of Israel
grumbled against Moses and Aaron.
The children of Israel said to them,
"Would that we had died at the LORD's hand in the land of Egypt,
as we sat by our fleshpots and ate our fill of bread!
But you had to lead us into this desert
to make the whole community die of famine!"

Then the LORD said to Moses,
"I will now rain down bread from heaven for you.
Each day the people are to go out and gather their daily portion;
thus will I test them,
to see whether they follow my instructions or not.
On the sixth day, however, when they prepare what they bring in,
let it be twice as much as they gather on the other days."

Then Moses said to Aaron, "Tell the whole congregation
of the children of Israel:
Present yourselves before the LORD,
for he has heard your grumbling."
When Aaron announced this to the whole assembly of the children of Israel,
they turned toward the desert, and lo,
the glory of the LORD appeared in the cloud!
The LORD spoke to Moses and said,
"I have heard the grumbling of the children of Israel.
Tell them: In the evening twilight you shall eat flesh,
and in the morning you shall have your fill of bread,

were fine flakes like hoarfrost on the ground.
On seeing it, the children of Israel asked one another, "What is this?"

Commentary:

16:1-36. The prodigy of the manna and the quails was a very important sign of God's special providence towards his people while they were in the desert. It is recounted here and in Numbers 11, but in both accounts facts are interwoven with interpretation of same and with things to do with worship and ethics.

Some scholars have argued that the manna is the same thing as a sweet secretion that comes from the tamarisk ("tamarix mannifera") when punctured by a particular insect commonly found in the mountains of Sinai. The drops of this resin solidify in the coldness of the night and some fall to the ground. They have to be gathered up early in the morning because they deteriorate at twenty-four degrees temperature (almost eighty degrees Celsius). Even today desert Arabs collect them and use them for sucking and as a sweetener in confectionery.

As we know, quails cross the Sinai peninsula on their migrations back and forth between Africa and Europe or Asia. In May or June, when they return from Africa they usually rest in Sinai, exhausted after a long sea crossing; they can be easily trapped at this point.

Although these phenomenon can show where the manna and the quail come from, the important thing is that the Israelites saw them as wonders worked by God. The sacred writer stops to describe the impact the manna had on the sons of Israel. They are puzzled by it, as can be seen from their remarks when it comes for the first time: "What is it?" they ask, which in Hebrew sounds like "man hu", that is, manna (v. 15), which is how the Greek translation puts it. Indeed, the need to collect it every day gave rise to complaints about some people being greedy (v. 20) and who did not understand the scope of God's gift (v. 15). And just as manna is a divine gift to meet a basic human need (nourishment), so too the divine precepts, specifically that of the sabbath, are a free gift from the Lord (v. 28). So, obedience is not a heavy burden but the exercise of a capacity to receive the good things that God gives to those who obey him.

The prodigy of the manna will resound right through the Bible: in the "Deuteronoic" tradition it is a test that God gives his people to show them that "man does not live by bread alone, but [...] by everything that proceeds from the mouth of the Lord" (Deut 8:3). The psalmist discovers that manna is "the bread of the strong" ("of angels", says the Vulgate and the RSV), which God sent in abundance (Ps 78:23ff; cf. Ps 105:40). The book of Wisdom spells out the features of this bread from heaven "ready to eat, providing every pleasure and suited to every taste" (Wis 16:20-29). And the New Testament reveals the full depth of this "spiritual" food (1 Cor 10:3), for, as the "Catechism" teaches, "manna in the desert prefigured the Eucharist, 'the true bread from heaven' (Jn 6:32)" ("Catechism of the Catholic Church", 1094).

16:2-3. The complaining that usually precedes the desert prodigies (cf. 14:11; 15: 24; 17:3; Num 11:1, 4; 14:2; 20:2; 21:4-5) brings into focus the chosen people's lack of faith and hope, and (by contrast) the faithfulness of God, who time and again alleviates their needs even though they do not deserve it. At the same time, just as Moses and Aaron listened patiently to complaints, God too is always ready to dialogue with the sinner, sometimes listening to his complaints and sorting them out, and sometimes simply giving him a chance to repent: "Although God could inflict punishment on those whom he condemns without saying anything, he does not do so; on the contrary, up to the point when he does condemn, he speaks with the guilty person and lets him talk, so as to help him avoid condemnation" (Origen, "Homiliae in leremiam", 1, 1).

3. Chapter 13 of St. Matthew includes as many as seven of Jesus' parables, which is the reason why it is usually called "the parable discourse" or the "parabolic discourse". Because of their similarity of content and setting these parables are often called the "Kingdom parables", and also the "parables of the Lake", because Jesus taught them on the shore of Lake Gennesaret. Jesus uses these elaborate comparisons (parables) to explain certain features of the Kingdom of God which He has come to establish (cf. Matthew 3:2)--its tiny, humble origins; its steady growth; its worldwide scope; its salvific force. God calls everyone to salvation but only those attain it who receive God's call with good dispositions and who do not change their attitude; the value of the spiritual benefits the Kingdom brings--so valuable that one should give up everything to obtain them; the fact that good and bad are all mixed together until the harvest time, or the time of God's judgment; the intimate connection between earthly and heavenly aspects of the Kingdom, until it reaches its point of full development at the end of time.

On Jesus' lips, parables are exceptionally effective. By using parables He keeps His listeners' attention, whether they are uneducated or not, and by means of the most ordinary things of daily life He sheds light on the deepest supernatural mysteries. He used the parable device in a masterly way; His parables are quite unique; they carry the seal of His personality; through them He has graphically shown us the riches of grace, the life of the Church, the demands of the faith and even the mystery of God's own inner life.

Jesus' teaching continues to provide every generation with light and guidance on moral conduct. By reading and reflecting on His parables one can savor the adorable humanity of the Savior, who showed such kindness to the people who crowded around to hear Him--and who shows the same readiness to listen to our prayers, despite our dullness, and to reply to our healthy curiosity when we try to make out His meaning.

3-8. Anyone who has visited the fertile plain to the west of the Lake of Gennesaret will appreciate Jesus' touching description in the parable of the sower. The plain is crisscrossed by paths; it is streaked with rocky ground, often with the rocks lying just beneath the surface, and with the courses of rivulets, dry for most of the year but still retaining some moisture. Here and there are clumps of large thorn bushes. When the agricultural worker sows seed in this mixed kind of land, he knows that some seed will fare better than others.

9. Jesus did not explain this parable there and then. It was quite usual for parables to be presented in the first instance as a kind of puzzle to gain the listener's attention, excite his curiosity and fix the parable in his memory. It may well be that Jesus wanted to allow his more interested listeners to identify themselves by coming back to hear Him again--as happened with His disciples. The rest --who listened out of idle curiosity or for too human reasons (to see Him work miracles) -- would not benefit from hearing a more detailed and deeper explanation of the parable.

At God’s word were his works brought into being;
they do his will as he has ordained for them.

The Splendor of the Created World

[16] The sun looks down on everything with its light, and the work of the Lord is full of his glory. [17] The Lord has not enabled his holy ones to recount all his marvellous works, which the Lord the Almighty has established that the universe may stand firm in his glory. [18] He searches out the abyss, and the hearts of men, and considers their crafty devices. For the Most High knows all that may be known, and he looks into the signs of the age. [19] He declares what has been and what is to be, and he reveals the tracks of hidden things. [20] No thought escapes him, and not one word is hidden from him. [21] He has ordained the splendors of his wisdom, and he is from everlasting and to everlasting. Nothing can be added or taken away, and he needs no one to be his counsellor. Commentary:

42:15-50:29 As in the other "parts" of the book, we can say that this one has two sections to it--a doctrinal section (dealing with the origin of the universe, God as Creator and provident Lord: 42:15-43:33) and then a sort of practical section (44: 1-50:29), dealing with praise of the ancestors of Israel to whom God "granted wisdom" (43:33). In this sense, this last part of Sirach is a recapitulation and a development of the two central ideas contained in the poems that mark the high point of the book (1:1-2:18 and 24:1-34). In Sirach 1:1 it said that "All wisdom comes from God" and, now in 42:15-43:33, it describes appreciation of the created world as discernment of that Wisdom that the Lord left imprinted upon it. And similarly, in 24:3-8, it said that Wisdom came from the mouth of the Most High, to dwell in Israel; and now, in 44:1-50:29, it describes how Wisdom was at work in "famous men" who lived in, keeping with the Law. The glory of God is to be seen in nature and in the history of mankind.

42:15-43:33. This last introductory section marks the climax of the book message. The author began by establishing that all wisdom comes from God (1:1-2: 21). Then he said that the study of the world and, of man is the, route to understanding because wisdom can be seen in the laws that God has built into everything he made (16:24-18:14). Therefore, in the third part of the book, it said that a person who desires to have wisdom must keep the commandments (24:1-34), that is, be steeped in "fear of the Lord", which was the focus, of the fourth part (32;14-33:18). Now it extols the glory of God, who creates and rules the world. When it says that "by the words of the Lord his works are done" (42:15) it must have in mind the first chapter of Genesis which narrates how God went about his work of creation and distinguished his works one from another by means of his word ("And God said ...". Gen 1:3, etc.); but the passage also prepares the way to understand the Word of God made flesh, as we discover in Jesus Christ in the New Testament. In the prologue to his Gospel, St. John proclaims that "all things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made" (Jn 1:3; see the note on 1:1-2:21). Thus, God's Revelation reached its climax in his incarnate Son: "In many and various ways God spoke of old to our fathers by the prophets; but in these last days he has spoken to us by a Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world" (Heb 1:1-2).

In his reflection on the glory of God as manifested in creation, Ben Sirach begins with thoughts on God's wisdom and knowledge (42:15-25) and then goes on to show how heavenly bodies manifest the glory of God--the sun (43:1-5), the moon (43:6-8), the stars (43:9-10) and the rainbow (43:11-12). Later he comments on God's power over the elements--snow, lightning, hail, thunder, winds, frost etc. (43:13-27). Finally he ponders the greatness of God over everything that exists and invites us to worship him as he deserves (43:27-32), for "the Lord has made all things, and to the godly he has granted wisdom" (43:33).

"God is infinitely greater than all works (Sir 43:30): 'You have set your glory above the heavens' (Ps 8:1; Sir 43:28). Indeed, 'God's greatness is unsearchable' (Ps 8: 2). But because he is the free and sovereign Creator, the first cause of all that exists, God is present to his creatures' inmost being: 'In him we live and move and have our being' 17:28). In the words of St Augustine God is 'higher than my highest and more inward than my innermost self' ("Conf., 3, 6, 11)" ("Catechism of the Catholic Church", 300).

46-52. "Hearing the commotion the crowd was making, the blind man asks, 'What is happening?' They told him, 'It is Jesus of Nazareth.' At this his soul was so fired with faith in Christ that he cried out, 'Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!'

"Don't you feel the same urge to cry out? You who are also waiting at the side of the way, of this highway of life that is so very short? You who need more light, you who need more grace to make up your mind to seek holiness? Don't you feel an urgent need to cry out, 'Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me'? What a beautiful aspiration for you to repeat again and again!...

"'Many rebuked him, telling him to be silent.' As people have done to you, when you sensed that Jesus was passing your way. Your heart beat faster and you too began to cry out, prompted by an intimate longing. Then your friends, the need to do the done thing, the easy life, your surroundings, all conspired to tell you: 'Keep quiet, don't cry out. Who are you to be calling Jesus? Don't bother Him.'

"But poor Bartimaeus would not listen to them. He cried out all the more: 'Son of David, have mercy on me.' Our Lord, who had heard him right from the beginning, let him persevere in his prayer. He does the same with you. Jesus hears our cries from the very first, but he waits. He wants us to be convinced that we need Him. He wants us to beseech Him, to persist, like the blind man waiting by the road from Jericho. 'Let us imitate him. Even if God does not immediately give us what we ask, even if many people try to put us off our prayers, let us still go on praying' (St. John Chrysostom, "Hom. on St. Matthew", 66).

"'And Jesus stopped, and told them to call Him.' Some of the better people in the crowd turned to the blind man and said, 'Take heart; rise, He is calling you.' Here you have the Christian vocation! But God does not call only once. Bear in mind that our Lord is seeking us at every moment: get up, He tells us, put aside your indolence, your easy life, your petty selfishness, your silly little problems. Get up from the ground, where you are lying prostrate and shapeless. Acquire height, weight and volume, and a supernatural outlook.

"And throwing off his mantle the man sprang up and came to Jesus. He threw off his mantle! I don't know if you have ever lived through a war, but many years ago I had occasion to visit a battlefield shortly after an engagement. There strewn all over the ground, were greatcoats, water bottles, haversacks stuffed with family souvenirs, letters, photographs of loved ones...which belonged, moreover, not to the vanquished but to the victors! All these items had become superfluous in the bid to race forward and leap over the enemy defenses. Just as happened to Bartimaeus, as he raced towards Christ.

"Never forget that Christ cannot be reached without sacrifice. We have to get rid of everything that gets in the way--greatcoat, haversack, water bottle. You have to do the same in this battle for the glory of God, in this struggle of love and peace by which we are trying to spread Christ's Kingdom. In order to serve the Church, the Pope and all souls, you must be ready to give up everything superfluous....

"And now begins a dialogue with God, a marvelous dialogue that moves us and sets our hearts on fire, for you and I are now Bartimaeus. Christ, who is God, begins to speak and asks, 'Quid tibi vis faciam?' 'What do you want Me to do for you?' The blind man answers. 'Lord, that I may see.' How utterly logical! How about yourself, can you really see? Haven't you too experienced at times what happened to the blind man of Jericho? I can never forget how, when meditating on this passage many years back, and realizing that Jesus was expecting something of me, though I myself did not know what it was, I made up my own aspirations: 'Lord, what is it You want! What are You asking of me'? I had a feeling that He wanted me to take on something new and the cry, 'Rabboni, ut videam', 'Master, that I may see,' moved me to beseech Christ again and again, 'Lord, whatever it is that You wish, let it be done.'

"Pray with me now to our Lord: 'doce me facere voluntatem tuam, quia Deus meus es tu" (Psalm 142:10) ('teach me to do Thy will, for You art my God'). In short, our lips should express a true desire on our part to correspond effectively to our Creator's promptings, striving to follow out His plans with unshakeable faith, being fully convinced that He cannot fail us....

"But let us go back to the scene outside Jericho. It is now to you that Christ is speaking. He asks you, 'What do you want Me to do for you?' 'Master, let me receive my sight.' Then Jesus answers, 'Go your way. Your faith has made you well.' And immediately he received his sight and followed Him on His way." Following Jesus on His way. You have understood what our Lord was asking to from you and you have decided to accompany Him on His way. You are trying to walk in His footsteps, to clothe yourself in Christ's clothing, to be Christ Himself: well, your faith, your faith in the light our Lord is giving you, must be both operative and full of sacrifice. Don't fool yourself. Don't think you are going to find new ways. The faith He demands of us is as I have said. We must keep in step with Him, working generously and at the same time uprooting and getting rid of everything that gets in the way" (St. J. Escriva, "Friends of God", 195-198).

Reading 1: Sir 17:1-15

God from the earth created man,
and in his own image he made him.
He makes man return to earth again,
and endows him with a strength of his own.
Limited days of life he gives him,
with power over all things else on earth.
He puts the fear of him in all flesh,
and gives him rule over beasts and birds.
He created for them counsel, and a tongue and eyes and ears,

Commentary:

16:24-23:27. These chapters are the second of the five parts we can distinguish in the book of Sirach. Like all the other parts it opens with doctrinal instruction (16:24-18:14), dealing this time with the divine Wisdom manifested by the Creator in all his works; this is followed (18:15-23:27) by a series of practical teachings. As in the previous part it is not easy to see any clear order in the ma- xims. However, further emphasis is put here on prudence in speech.

16:24-18:14 The doctrinal introduction to the first part of the book (1:1-2:18) summarized the main ideas in the book and put the focus, mainly, on the Lord, the only God, as being the source of wisdom. Now the author goes on to explain that, in creating the universe, the Most High arranged all his works in order and laid down laws to govern them (16:27). First (cf. 16:24-31) we find teachings from the first chapters of Genesis: creation took place "from [in] the beginning" (16:26a; Gen 1:1); God determined the order of things (16:26b; Gen 1:3-2:3); with the result that it "was good" (Gen 1:4, 10, 12, 18, 21, 25, 31 and Sir 16:29b) and "he covered its surface with all kinds of living beings" (16:30; Gen 1:20-31).

Pre-eminent among these created beings is man, made in the image of God (cf. 17:3; Gen 1:26-27). When it sees the harmony of the universe and all the living things that populate it, the human mind can recognize that there is a pattern to all this and can work its way up to God (17: 1-10). St Paul, in his Letter to the Romans, makes the point, again that "his (God's) invisible nature, namely, his eternal power and deity, has been clearly perceived in the things that have been made" (Rom 1:20). In addition, man has been given divine law to help him lead a life in line with what God has revealed to him over the course of time. And the supernatural revelation of the Law through Moses makes God's wisdom shine
even brighter (17:11-17).

This brings the writer to reflect on God as Judge, and on man as someone who must render an account to his creator, not just as regards his external actions but as regards even his inmost thoughts. This is a well-argued case for conversion to God (cf. 17:19-32). Ben Sirach has clear ideas about the meaning of life and death, but the New Testament sees further. He knows that the Lord will "recompense" people (cf. 17:23), but he does not go so far as to say that there is life after death (17:27-31).In any event, for the author the main thing is to give praise to God (17:27-29); hence his call to conversion (17:24, 26, 29).

The doctrinal introduction to this second part of the book concludes with reflections on the majesty and compassion of God--so vast compared to man (18:1-14).Having established just how limited man is, Ben Sirach asks himself: What is man, and what good can be do? God is under no obligation to care for man, to encourage him to do good or to guard him against evil. This sapiential style of writing is rhetorical: it is meant to draw attention to God's kindness and mercy towards man. The sacred writer does not have access to God's last revelation in the form of Jesus Christ; but by contemplating God's favors to Israel he is able to get more insights into man and the nature of man. John Paul II points out that: "These are questions in every human heart, as the poetic genius of every time and every people has shown, posing again and again -- almost as the prophetic voice of humanity -- the "serious question" which makes human beings truly what they are.

They are questions which express the urgency of finding a reason for existence, in every moment, at life's most important and decisive times as well as more ordinary times. These questions show the deep reasonableness of human existence, since they summon human intelligence and will to search freely for a solution which can reveal the full meaning of life. These enquiries, therefore,are the highest expression of human nature; which is why the answer to them is the gauge of the depth of his engagement with his own existence. In particular, when "the why of things" is explored in full harmony with the search for the ultimate answer, then human reason reaches its zenith and opens to the religious impulse. The religious impulse is the highest expression of the human being's free and personal search for the divine" ("Fides Et Ratio", note 28).

Commentary:

13-16. This Gospel account has an attractive freshness and vividness about it which may be connected with St. Peter, from whom St. Mark would have taken the story. It is one of the few occasions when the Gospels tell us that Christ became angry. What provoked His anger was the disciples' intolerance: they felt that these people bringing children to Jesus were a nuisance: it meant a waste of His time; Christ had more serious things to do than be involved with little children. The disciples were well-intentioned; it was just that they were applying the wrong criteria. What Jesus had told them quite recently had not registered: "Whoever receives one such child in My name receives Me; and whoever receives Me, receives not Me but Him who sent Me" (Mark 9:37).

Our Lord also stresses that a Christian has to become like a child to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. "To be little you have to believe as children believe, to love as children love, to abandon yourself as children do..., to pray as children pray" (St. J. Escriva, "Holy Rosary", Prologue).

Our Lord's words express simply and graphically the key doctrine of man's divine sonship: God is our Father and we are His sons and daughters, His children; the whole of religion is summed up in the relationship of a son with His good Father. This awareness of God as Father involves a sense of dependence on our Father in Heaven and trusting abandonment to His loving providence--in the way a child trusts its father or mother; the humility of recognizing that we can do nothing by ourselves; simplicity and sincerity, which make us straightforward and honest in our dealings with God and man.

Let your acquaintances be many,

When you gain a friend, first test him,

But from the beginning of creation, God made them male and female.

In the house the disciples again questioned Jesus about this.He said to them,
“Whoever divorces his wife and marries another
commits adultery against her;

Commentary:

5:15-6:17. This is the first occasion that Ben Sirach discusses friendship -- a subject that comes up often in his teaching (cf. 9:10-16; 19:13-17; 22:19-26; 37:1-15); in fact Sirach is the book of the Bible that has most to say on the subject. Here and in the other passages, what we have is not so much a theoretical discussion of friendship as a series of concrete situations that show the sort of behavior one would expect of a friend.

In the Gospel we find instances of Jesus' close friendships and less about the importance of friendship the extent to which it can go: "Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends" (Jn 15:13). And St Ambrose, commenting on v. 14 writes: "Friendship should be constant [...]. You should not leave a friend in his hour of need, nor do him injury, nor abandon him, because friendship is a lifelong source of help" ("De Officiis", 2, 3, 22).

Taking the life of Jesus as an example St. Josemaria Escriva invites his readers to consider that "A friend is a treasure. Well...you have a friend! For where your treasure is, there is your heart" ("The Way", 421).

6:17-37. The teacher now gives his disciples advice on what they need to do to acquire wisdom.

First, he talks about docility and commitment to the task, using imagery taken from agricultural work, particularly wearing the yoke (v. 24-25), though he says it is easy enough to bear. These verses remind us of what Jesus says when he invites us to find true Wisdom and peace of soul in his teaching: "Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle. and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls" (Mt 11:29).

Then, in line with the education tradition of the ancient East, the writer urges his disciples to listen to their elders, spending time with them and following their example. Finally, returning to an idea that runs right through the book, he reminds his disciple what he must do to he wise -- reflect on the commandments of the Lord and live by them (v, 37). For true maturity comes not so much from age as from doing the will of God: "You should show the moderation, fortitude, and sense of responsibility that many people acquire after many long years, in their old age. You will achieve all this, while you are still young, if you do not lose the supernatural outlook of a son of God. For he will give you, more than to the old, those qualities you need for your apostle's work" (St. J. Escriva, "The Forge", 53).

Commentary:

1-12. This kind of scene occurs often in the Gospel. The malice of the Pharisees contrasts with the simplicity of the crowd, who listen attentively to Jesus' teaching. The Pharisees' question aimed at tricking Jesus into going against the Law of Moses. But Jesus Christ, Messiah and Son of God, has perfect understanding of that Law. Moses had permitted divorce because of the hardness of that ancient people: women had an ignominious position in those primitive tribes (they were regarded almost as animals or slaves); Moses, therefore, protected women's dignity against these abuses by devising the certificate of divorce; this was a real social advance. It was a document by which the husband repudiated his wife and she obtained freedom. Jesus restores to its original purity the dignity of man and woman in marriage, as instituted by God at the beginning of creation. "A man leaves his father and his mother and cleaves to his wife, and they become one flesh" (Genesis 2:24): in this way God established from the very beginning the unity and indissolubility of marriage. The Church's Magisterium, the only authorized interpreter of the Gospel and of the natural law, has constantly guarded and defended this teaching and has proclaimed it solemnly in countless documents (Council of Florence, "Pro Armeniis"; Council of Trent, "De Sacram. Matr."; Pius XI, "Casti Connubi"; Vatican II, "Gaudium Et Spes", 48; etc.).

Here is a good summary of this doctrine: "The indissolubility of marriage is not a caprice of the Church nor is it merely a positive ecclesiastical law. It is a precept of natural law, of divine law, and responds perfectly to our nature and to the supernatural order of grace" (St. J. Escriva, "Conversations", 97). Cf. note on Matthew 5:31-32.

5-9. When a Christian realizes that this teaching applies to everyone at all times, he should not be afraid of people reacting against it: "It is a fundamental duty of the Church to reaffirm strongly [...] the doctrine of the indissolubility of marriage. To all those who, in our times, consider it too difficult, or indeed impossible, to be bound to one person for the whole of life, and to those caught up in a culture that rejects the indissolubility of marriage and openly mocks the commitment of spouses to fidelity, it is necessary to reaffirm the good news of the definitive nature of that conjugal love that has in Christ its foundation and strength (cf. Ephesians 5:25).

"Being rooted in the personal and total self-giving of the couple, and being required by the good of the children, the indissolubility of marriage finds its ultimate truth in the plan that God has manifested in His revelation: He wills and He communicates the indissolubility of marriage as a fruit, a sign and a requirement of the absolutely faithful love that God has for man and that the Lord Jesus has for the Church.

"Christ renews the first plan that the Creator inscribed in the hearts of man and woman, and in the celebration of the sacrament of matrimony offers 'a new heart': thus the couples are not only able to overcome 'hardness of heart' (Matthew 19: 8), but also and above all they are able to share the full and definitive love of Christ, the new and eternal Covenant made flesh. Just as the Lord Jesus is the 'faithful witness' (Revelation 3:14), the 'yes' of the promises of God (cf. 2 Corinthians 1:20) and thus the supreme realization of the unconditional faithfulness with which God loves His people, so Christian couples are called to participate truly in the irrevocable indissolubility that binds Christ to the Church, His bride, loved by Him to the end (cf. John 13:1).

"To bear witness to the inestimable value of the indissolubility and fidelity of marriage is one of the most precious and most urgent tasks of Christian couples in our time" (John Paul II, "Familiaris Consortio", 20).
